Don't do sadness! Deaf West’s revival of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's Spring Awakening opens officially at the Great White Way's Brooks Atkinson Theatre on September 27. Directed by Michael Arden, the staging incorporates American Sign Language with the dialogue, as select characters are portrayed as deaf, with additional performers providing their voices.
In honor of the musical’s big night, Broadway.com resident artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson created this sketch. The portrait includes Austin P. McKenzie as Melchior, Daniel N. Durant as Moritz, Sandra Mae Frank as Wendla, and the key supporting cast including Oscar winner Marlee Matlin as a variety of adult characters, along with Broadway.com Audience Choice Award winners Krysta Rodriguez as Ilse and Andy Mientus as Hanschen (and more!).
Broadway.com wishes the cast of Spring Awakening a happy opening. Make sure you get "Totally F**ked" at the after-party!
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home.
